Many years before Christianity becoming the dominant religion, Botswana adhered toward Badimo a religion amongst the people. Modimo was the God of choice worshipped by these people. The word Badimo ,among the Tswana people of Botswana means “ancestor.”  The people do not simply refer to the dead loved ones , but rather believe that the dead are active and present in people in their daily lives  of individuals. They practiced many ceremonies to the dead.  It is said many traditional Africans believe there is 2 types of illnesses. Those created by Modimo or ancestral spirits and those by other human beings. They believe in a healthy relationship between the living and the dead, so they still seek the power of the super spirit beings for help. Many still go to the Traditional African witch doctors for help.[5]

According to the census in 2001 less than 5500 live in Botswana making Islam a minority religion in Botswana, where 1 percent of the population practice. Muslims started arriving Botswana early during British rule. However inter-religious peace still remains despite many fighting in the other parts of Africa.[6]
